Throughout the book, Thomas becomes her lover and mentor, watching her powers grow at an almost frightening rate. Natalia also has a competitor. A blue-eyed, beautiful and cunning agent, the Transylvanian Alina Bălan, wants to attract Thomas Crew to her side, that is, to the side of darkness. Thomas must find out what Alina knows.
